If there’s a victory tree that falls in a forest full of democrats, does it make a sound?

From Donald Lambro at Townhall comes a great article.

The pessimists and defeatists who declared the surge doomed and prophesied that we were digging ourselves into a deeper hole have been proven wrong. The story of Iraq at this point is that terrorists have been killed, captured or driven out of territory retaken and cleansed by American and Iraqi forces — a coalition that has stabilized much of the country.

But statistics are one thing, and the response of the Iraqi people is quite another. The most dramatic sign of improvement in Iraq can be seen in the number of Iraqi refugees who fled the violence at the height of the war and are now returning home in increasing numbers.

The drumbeat gets louder. Just for grins, I’m going to use this thread to list all the sour pusses that I can find who said this would fail, with quotes and links.

Great resource!

  1. Barak Hussein Obama…

Finally, in 2006, 2007, we started to see that, even after an election, George Bush continued
to want to pursue a course that didn’t withdraw troops from Iraq but actually doubled down and initiated the surge.

And at that stage, I said, very clearly, not only have we not seen improvements, but we’re actually worsening, potentially, a situation there.

  2. John Edwards…. (April 16, 2007)

“It’s absolutely clear that the surge is, in fact, failing. The attack on the Iraqi parliament inside the Green Zone is clear evidence of that,” Edwards told CNN’s “American Morning.”

  3. Hillary Clinton….August 23, 2007

“The surge was designed to give the Iraqi government time to take steps to ensure a political solution,” she said. “It has failed.”

  4. And a twofer from my “favorite” ex-General, Wesley Clark…. (January 7, 2007)

The report of the Iraq Study Group is widely seen as a formal confirmation of US failure in Iraq.

What the surge would do, however, is put more American troops in harm’s way, further undercut US forces’ morale, and risk further alienation of elements of the Iraqi populace. American casualties would probably rise, at least temporarily, as more troops are on the streets; we saw this when the brigade from Alaska was extended and sent into Baghdad last summer. And even if the increased troop presence initially intimidates or frustrates the contending militias, it won’t be long before they find ways to work around the obstacles to movement and neighbourhood searches, if they are still intent on pursuing the conflict. All of this is not much of an endorsement for a troop surge that will impose real pain on the already overstretched US forces.

And BTW — what’s with the European spelling? It doesn’t make you look any smarter, General. What a twit!

  5. Leon Panetta…. Sept. 9, 2007

Unfortunately, what we are seeing today is in many ways a repetition of the results of the two “surges” in 2005 and 2006. While U.S. forces are both clearing and now holding areas around Baghdad and pressing efforts to recruit and pay local Sunni Arabs to protect neighborhoods in central Iraq, there remain serious concerns over the ability of the Iraqi Army and police to effectively control sectarian violence in areas cleared by U.S. forces. The fear is that all of this is only temporary, and once the United States withdraws, the insurgents will return.

  6. Nancy Pelosi…. June 28, 2007

The surge has been tried at least three times before and failed. I have been to the region, the theatre before the initiation of hostilities, right before, and then a number of times since then. I said to the President, Mr. President, the surge has been tried at least three or four times already. What makes you think it will work this time?

there is no justification for the course they are taking in Iraq

The generals know it. General Odom has done a response to the president on the subject, said that any stability in the Middle East must begin with the redeployment of American troops out of Iraq.

  7. Sen. Harry Reid (talk about sour pusses! YIKES!)

With a banner behind them that said “Support the Troops” and “Transition the Mission” Reid stood with Ret. Lt. Gen. Robert Gard and Ret. Brig. Gen. John Johns and said that the surge should be abandoned.

    April 20, 2007

“I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and – you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows – (know) this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday,” said Reid, D-Nev.

    Nov. 17, 2007

Reid maintained the Bush “surge” strategy of flowing thousands of additional troops to Iraq has not brought about political improvements in the country and needs to be scrapped. He said the Democrats’ offer was reasonable.

“The president and his enablers in Congress are so afraid of being held accountable for this disastrous war policy that they would rather leave our men and women in uniform empty-handed than work to change course in Iraq,” he said after the votes.

  8. Rep. Jason Altmire… Aug 31, 2007

“Unfortunately by almost every measure of progress, they have not only failed to make progress, but they have actually gone backwards,” Representative Jason Altmire told reporters.

  9. Chisel their defeatistist blatherings in stone, Star, the better for them to choke on for decades to come.
